Disinformation and propaganda on social networks: mechanisms, players, victims – lecture with Nikola Tulechki

On March 9, the Association of European Journalists-Bulgaria, together with the association \“Data for Good\“, will held an online lecture on Disinformation and propaganda on social networks: mechanisms, players, victims. The event starts at 17:00 and lasts 90 minutes. Nikola Tulechki – lecturer in Semantic Technologies at Sofia University and NBU, data expert at Ontotext and chairman of the association \“Data for Good\“ – will present the techniques of \“trolls\“ and the mechanics of the dissemination of misinformation on social networks.

During the lecture, specific examples will be considered regarding the argument that this phenomenon is inevitable and is a natural consequence of the very principle of functioning of social networks (by design). The methods, motivation (or lack thereof) of the main players will be described, and participants will receive guidance on what each of us can do to protect ourselves and especially not to become an accomplice in the problem.

Nikola Tulechki has been an expert on data in Ontotext since 2017. Prior to that, he completed a doctoral dissertation in Toulouse (France) on the applications of automatic processing of the language of aviation incident reports. In Ontotext, he works on various research projects, where he mainly deals with semantic data modeling. More generally, Nichola is interested in related open data, both from a structural point of view and from the point of view of their social significance.
The lecture is organized within the campaign \“Media Literacy Days 2021\“. The campaign is an initiative of the Media Literacy Coalition, which aims to increase the media literacy of Bulgarian citizens. Media Literacy Days 2021 are supported by the Department of Education and Science, the Department of Culture, the US Embassy Small Grants Program, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, UNICEF Bulgaria, TechSoup Europe and Funky Citizens.
